Four-Day Professional Placement: An Overview Of My Time In Marketing

From Tuesday 11th - Friday 14th March 2025, I joined the marketing department at Lolly to discover more about the core roles and responsibilities within the profession, as well as the various specialist areas and potential development that a career in marketing offers.

Day One - 11/03/2025
My first day began with a tour of the company, meeting each member of staff within their respected departments. After my tour, I was shown Lolly’s website, where I started to familiarise myself with its content and the plethora of products the business provides for the hospitality industry.

Having researched the company’s range of specialist hospitality technology and the sectors it caters for, I was then invited into the marketing team’s Quarterly Brainstorm Meeting. Here, they discussed tasks in progress, upcoming marketing projects for Q2, marketing successes so far in 2025, and certain strategies that could be improved, with a focus on which goals to prioritise and how these will be achieved throughout the rest of the year.

Once the meeting was over, I continued my research of the website, navigating the Latest News articles and Case Studies pieces to gain a greater insight on their success and influence within the hospitality industry. I was then pulled into a meeting with Mark, Lolly’s Marketing Strategist, who spoke strongly on the use of AI tools, such as Copilot, ChatGPT, and Gemini to name a few, and how their intelligent software can provide assistance with image generation, copywriting suggestions, as well as simple, everyday tasks that could be better optimised.

Shortly after my meeting with Mark, I spoke with Dylan, Marketing Assistant at Lolly, who set me a couple of tasks to work on for the rest of the day. My first task was to fix a list of 62 individual broken links, which involved replacing each of their URLs with a suitable working URL from an existing page within Lolly’s website that closely relates to the topic of the faulty link. The second task was to write a diary of my experiences and takeaways from each day during my work experience here at Lolly, of which this article is the finished product.

Day Two - 12/03/2025
I had a meeting first thing with Harriet, Product Manager at Lolly, who walked me through the company’s products in more detail, showing me the roadmap of new products currently in development and when these have been predicated for eventual launch on the market. She also explained the importance of the product team working closely alongside the marketing team, as any asset that Lolly releases will need to be marketed and promoted differently, with tailored campaigns designed draw in potential customers that are looking for a new/better solution for their hospitality business.

The rest of my morning was dedicated to fixing the dead links, and eventually, I fixed every URL that was returning a 404 error. Having been given temporary access for the week to the back end of Lolly’s website, I resolved this issue by navigating to the website’s settings and adding redirects for each broken URL.

With all broken links redirected, Dylan then gave me another task to complete, comprising of a keyword list that featured an array of industry-specific terms, which if applicable, can be implemented within existing articles and case studies. He claimed that including more of these exact keywords and phrases within Lolly’s written pieces would be a beneficial practice, particularly in the eyes of Google; once Google scans the updated pieces and recognises their high authority on a specialist topic, the pages will start ranking higher, potentially leading to a boost in analytical performance, such as increased web traffic and conversion rates.

Day Three - 13/03/2025
Upon completing the task from yesterday afternoon, which involved implementing any applicable keywords and phrases to relevant blog posts on the site, Dylan then suggested that I add applicable internal and external links to existing blog pages that would provide additional navigation for users, promoting greater click-through within the content of each piece. This involved linking any references of products, sectors, organisations, etc., to their corresponding destinations.

Later, I met with Fraser, Sales Support Executive at Lolly, who gave an overview of his role within sales and how certain elements of his line of work overlap with marketing. He will often liaise with the marketing team upon any requests that are made for bespoke materials, such as presentations for upcoming client tenders, as well as promotional content for products that have a high interest from customers.

Day Four (Final Day) - 14/03/2025
On the final day of my work experience with Lolly, I was given a walking tour of Lolly’s entire product range by Dylan and Glen in marketing. This provided a greater insight into Lolly’s tech innovations, such as official product names, branding, functionality, and business application across each category, consisting of EPoS, Payments, Mobile App, Self-Serve, Robots, Digital Signage, and Kitchen Management Systems.

Once the product tour was over, I was tasked with one final exercise, which involved recapping areas of Lolly’s product range as well as summarising my time here at Lolly through the medium of generative AI. Using an intelligent online tool that the company utilises to market its technology for hospitality, I was able to share my experiences from the perspective of a humanised avatar, opening my eyes to alternate promotional strategies and ways that companies are able to stand out from the crowd.

I thank Lolly for this incredible placement, having learned valuable new skills throughout the past four days and understanding how various types of content can be further developed using specialist tools to deliver effective marketing strategies.
